Magazine advert with photo

Digipak and CD design

Digipak

This is a draft design of my Digipak, I have explained the digipak design on a previous page and I have used real images here to show what my digipak will look like.

CD

So that my CD does not cover the photo frame photo which is in the middle of the inside which shows a picture of Tom Odell and his now girlfriend/ future wife when they are middle aged, I have put the photo on top of the CD.

This is the CD

This is what the CD will look like when the digipak is in its template and the CD is on it

Magazine advert idea

Why I chose the image used on the magazine advert

For my magazine advert idea I decided to have the same photo as I used for the front cover of the digipak. This is because once people have seen this magazine advert it will be easy to identify in shops what the digipak itself looks like because there is the same recognisable image.  I decided to put a photo of the artist and their girlfriend having a picnic at the park on it. They are looking at each other laughing whilst sitting down on their picnic blanket. The reason I decided to have this photo as the magazine advert is because I want the magazine advert and the digipak front cover to follow the narrative of the music video and not just be about the single itself. This helps promote the artist and their music video and therefore promotes the single. As Tom Odell is Indie Pop, the location of this photo for the magazine advert being in the park supports the low budget settings that Indie music often has for their music videos, digipak photos and magazine advert photo locations as the marketing of the artist will be on a low budget. Therefore to make all three of these promotional items relate so that people keep the single in their mind they can think of this photo as it would be used in all three.

Typography

On the top right hand side of the magazine advert it has the artists name 'Tom Odell' on it. At the bottom of the magazine advert the single title 'Grow Old With Me' is written on. The typography will be in a simple font where the words 'Tom Odell' will be in capital letters to make it look bold and stand out to the target market, this is also written in the same way on my idea for a digipak so when the target audience see the single released in shops they will automatically see the artists name. The name of the single will be in the same font but only the first letter of each word will be in capitals. This is because it looks better.

Just above the name of the single 'Grow Old with Me' there will be the information regarding when the digipak/ single will be released and in what way you will be able to buy it including CD, Digital and on iTunes. The reason I put a release date on the magazine advert is because people who are big fans of Tom Odell may want to buy this single straight away when it is released or even pre order it. The reason I have put the ways in which you can buy this song on (through iTunes or on CD etc) is so that if general people or people of the target audience see this magazine advert and think that they would like to buy the song but are not sure in what way it is being sold, they can thing think about whether they would like the CD or whether they would like the music downloaded onto their phone, computer etc.

At the bottom right hand corner of this magazine advert I have put Tom Odell's official webpage. This is to promote Tom Odell as an artist and not just this song specifically. If people who do not know much about him as an artist or if fans just want to learn more about him they can go on this webpage and look at perhaps other songs he is working on, look at previous songs and tour dates etc. This is good because it may encourage people to buy the tickets for his concerts and therefore he will have more ticket sales and people watching him live. Therefore I think it is important that this is written on the page as then it promotes more than just his upcoming single.

Colours used on the magazine advert

The colours of the magazine advert will be reasonably bright as it is supposed to be a picnic during the day and be a positive setting to support the positive lyrics in the song about him loving his girlfriend and wanting to grow old with her. The artist will be wearing dark colours though as this re-enforces that the genre is Indie Pop as many artists including Tom Odell wear a lot of black/grey/brown. The girl in the photo will be wearing jeans and will have probably have a coat on over her top depending on the weather when the image is taken.

Now that I have designed my initial idea for my magazine advert for the single 'Grow Old with Me' I will need to look at the other member of my groups magazine advert idea and together we will design the final magazine advert taking different aspects from each initial magazine advert.

Tom Odell, Long Way Down - Magazine advert analysis

As the music video I am going to be producing is for one of Tom Odell's songs called 'Grow Old With Me' and I am going to be creating a magazine advert, it is going to be useful analysing one of his magazine adverts so that I can perhaps take inspiration from it as the genre is the same. Tom Odell is an Indie pop artist who is promoting his album 'Long Way Down' in this magazine advert.

At the top of this album the text says 'Tom Odell' in capital letters. This is in capital letters to make it stand out so that he is promoted as an artist and people can see whose album is about to be promoted on this magazine advert. Tom Odell's name is also in brown text on this magazine advert which is a completely different colour to what the rest of the text is in on this magazine advert as that is white. By having his name in another colour to the other text it makes him stand out which promoted him as an artist and not just this current album of his. Straight underneath the his name is the name of the album called 'Long Way Down'. This title is also in capital letters to make it stand out and to promote the album. As in the photo on this magazine advert Tom Odell is standing to the right there is empty space on the left side of the photo. Here it says 'Brit awards 2013, the debut album from the Brits choice award winner 2013'.  This is also all in capital letters to make it stand out to the audience who are reading this magazine advert to encourage them to buy the album. This is because it says how good the British public think Tom Odell's album is because they voted it to win at the Brits awards. By having some kind of famous show on this magazine advert it shows that although he is an indie pop artist that there is an element of pop and that people do like his music and therefore they should buy his album as other members of the British audience like him.

Tom Odell is standing in a cobbled street on the photo of himself used on this magazine advert. This is a simple, free, setting to fit the low budget theme of an indie pop album. This is because the marketing side of promoting this artist is on a low budget. The photo has a shot looking all the way down a street but the other side of the street is slightly out of focus/ blurred. This goes with the name 'Long Way Down' and maybe there is a long road to go down his path of life. This will encourage people who want to listen to meaningful music talking about someone's life to buy the album. I think this long street has connotations of what the song is about. In this photo Tom Odell is wearing a dark green jacket and blue shirt, his has also got scruffy hair and is not surrounded by materialistic items. This is a generic convention of indie pop artists as they often wear dark clothing and are not trying to be someone they are not by wearing designer clothing having groomed hair etc. This is the same photo that Tom Odell used for his actual album cover and buy using it again in his magazine advert he is promoting the album because there is a recognisable image. This means that once they have seen the magazine advert it will be easier for people to see it in shops or find it online as they know what the album itself looks like.

By analysing Tom Odell's magazine advert it will be useful for me when creating my magazine advert for a Tom Odell single because I understand the generic conventions that suits the genre and that it is a good idea to use the same image for the digipak and the magazine advert. I also now know that positioning of the text is important and the colour, font and whether it is in upper or lower case letters.

Jessie J, Who You Are - Magazine Advert Analysis

Jessie J is of the genres pop and R&B. In this magazine advert she is advertising her album called 'Who you are' which was released in 2011. Within this album 'Who you are' is a song and the other songs include Price Tag, Nobody's Perfect, Abracadabra, Big White Room, Casualty of Love, Rainbow, Whose Laughing Now, Do it like a Dude, Mamma Knows Best, L.O.V.E, Stand Up and I Need this. The image on this magazine advert is the same image that is used on the actual album. This is to make the album recognisable when being sold as people will know by looking at the magazine advert what the album will look like.

Centrally positioned in large gold text is there artist Jessie J's name. Both of these J's are in capital letters. This is to emphasise the double J which people recognise about her as an artist. Both of these J's are linked together as well. The reason why the text is in gold is to make it stand out against the black which is the main use of colour within this magazine advert. Another reason that the name of the artist is in gold to re-enforce the fact that she is a pop artist and this is because gold has connotations of wealth and therefore being about to afford materialistic items which are used more in pop videos and the pop artists marketing such as the promotion because the mainstream record labels can afford to spend this on their signed artists, for example Jessie J was signed by Universal Republic which was owned by the very big company Universal Music Group and now she is signed by LAVA who is also owned by Universal Music Group.   This gold colour is a theme throughout this whole magazine advert for 'Who you are'  as the words 'Debut Album' and 'Includes the *1 international smash' as well as Jessie J's official webpage being in gold. This shows that apart from her name being in gold and her webpage, that the other gold text is used to introduce something very important as the name of the album then follows on from debut album and the smash hit 'Price tag feat B.o.B' follows on from where is says 'Includes the *1 international smash'. The other gold text which is her name and her webpage is used to promote her as an artist and suggests to the audience that her music is top standard as she is a great artist because gold has positive connotations. The fact that her webpage is on this page is also good to promote Jessie J because it may encourage ticket sales of her tours and for fans to find out more about her as an artist. Gold is also then reinforced as a theme in this magazine advert because on her black lips there is a gold floral design as well as her wearing gold earrings.

The other writings which is the very important information, this includes the name of the album 'who you are' and the name of another of her singles feat B.o.B are in white text. This is to make it stand out on the page because it is on a black background. By putting the name of the album on here it ensures that people know what album to ask for when going into a shop if they cannot find it as well as if ordering the album online it will be easy to find when using the album name. Also the use of putting on another one of her songs in which another artist performs will help to boost sales of the album because B.o.B is famous internationally and therefore helps to promote Jessie's album.

In the bottom left hand corner of this magazine advert there is the logo for LAVA who is the record label who signed Jessie J and on the right hand side of the magazine advert there is the logo for Universal Republic who also signed Jessie J. These are put on the magazine advert for Jessie J's album so that the people who view this in a magazine know which record labels helped produce and distribute Jessie J's music and who funded it all. For people who are not fans of Jessie J because they have never heard of her before but know the music industry well, by seeing these logos it may convince them to buy her music and listen to it because they know then that she is a pop artist who is supported by companies who are from the Universal Music Group and that therefore if they are willing to distribute her music and fund everything that she must be good as it is harder to get signed by these big mainstream companies and they have a good reputation.

The main colour in this magazine advert is black. Jessie Jay has black eye makeup, black hair, black nails, black lips, a black top and at the bottom of the page the background is black. Black is often seen as something that is dark and hides you away but in this photo Jessie has her hands near her eyes looking like she has just moved them from her face showing that she will no longer hide. This supports her album name 'Who you are' as it is saying be who you are and don't hide away any more. The black is also eye capturing as there the audience will think that there is a dark truth to the music in this album and perhaps they need to listen to it and the lyrics to find out what has been hiding. The black lipstick used on Jessie's face supports that she is a pop artist because in the pop world people wear costumes and work on sets that are not realistic at all and people in every day life don't tend to wear or be around and most people would not walk around with black lipstick on.

By analysing this magazine advert is will be good for me when creating a magazine advert for my artist because I can look at the typography on the advert and think about whether the font colours and positioning of each word is suitable for the genre of my artist. I can also think about the image and whether it is suitable for the artist and genre as well as what I should write on the magazine advert such as the album name, the artist name etc. From this magazine advert I realised that it doesn't not have the release date of the album which I know is important to help increase sales on the release date and therefore I will have this on my magazine advert.

Avril Lavigne, The Best Damn Thing - Magazine advert analysis

Avril Lavigne is an artist of the pop punk/ pop rock genre. This magazine advert is to advertise her album called 'the best damn thing'. The image on the front of this magazine advert is the same image that is on the album front cover as well as her name and album title is put on the image in the same way that that it is on the album (positioning and font of it). The purpose for this is so that when people see this magazine advertisement they will remember this image and when looking to buy the album in shops they will know what they are looking for because they have seen what the front cover looks like before.

Typography

At the top of this magazine advert the name of the artist Avril Lavigne is in capital letters and in a black simple font. This is centrally positioned at the top of the page and stands out. The reason for the block capital letters is so that it promoted her as an artist and that people know who's Album it is that they are seeing advertised. Although she is in the genre pop rock/punk, the genre of rock and punk are less recognised than mainstream pop and therefore some people will not automatically know who she is as an artist so her name is being made to stand out to promote her more. This text is in black writing which is to make it stand out more as it is on a white background. Underneath the artists name the title of the album 'the best damn thing' is in lower case text and is in a pink box. As the album title is in white text the pink surrounding it makes it stand out more. The reason it is in lower case text is to make it different from everything else that is on the advert because all the other text is in upper case. This makes it stand out just because it is different which promotes the album however by the fact that it says at the bottom 'includes the single girlfriend' it shows that although the album name has a song with that name in the album the most popular song that people wanted to buy was girlfriend so the magazine advert is really trying to push to the target market that this song is included in this album and that they should buy this album.

At the bottom of this magazine advert it says 'April 16th' in a bigger font size to the rest and the text is in white. By having the text in white it stands out more. This is because it is the release date of the album and it is trying to convince the people who read this advert to buy the album. As this magazine advert will have been published before the actual release it will get fans to perhaps pre-order the album or want to go out on the release date and buy this album. At the very bottom of the page it has Avril Lavigne's official website being advertised. The reason that this is put on the bottom of the magazine advert is so that for people who would like to know more about the artist or know a lot but would like to find out more information such as the tour dates and look at what music she is currently working on/ her previous music this is a way they can keep informed. By having this web address on here it promotes the artist as a whole and not just this album and may help to increase sales of things such as concert tickets.

Colour

On this magazine advert in the top left hand corner there is a pink heart with bones going through it. Avril Lavigne was known for being a skate punk. The bones connote death and as they are going through a pink love heart it suggests that there is a death to love and maybe that Avril Lavigne's songs that are in this album may be about heartbreak and the break up of a relationship she has hate. Skate punk is often associated with aggressive sound and the bones go with this as maybe Lavigne is to blame for the bones appearing (the heartbreak). Pink is used throughout this magazine advert on the heart, it is surrounding the title of the album, Avril Lavigne has it in her hair and there are little pink stars as well as the whole bottom of the magazine advert being filled in pink. This pink is here to show Avril Lavigne's feminine side as well because people see punk and rock as stereotypically manly and depressing with dark colours as people often use black to show their expressions and emotion in this genre, so Avril Lavigne has tried to change this slightly, however she has shown this dark side to her so that people know her genre by wearing a lot of black eye make up in this photo and a black top and a white shirt with black spots on it. The white shirt with black spots connote that she may appear ok on the outside but the black is starting to cover her up and she is starting to show this emotion. The black also shows her rebellious side as it is very stereotypical for punk/ rock artists to rebel against the norms in society which she is already known for as an artist. The fact that Lavigne has blonde hair seems strange for her genre of music as most rock artists have black hair to follow a theme and this is what makes her stand out as an artist which is shown in this magazine advert that she doesn't just follow what she is expected to do in her genre as she has pink, white and blonde hair on this magazine advert. Her facial expression has negative connotations which supports the genre as it shows her emotion

Overall analysing this magazine advert has been useful for me because it shows me that I should put the release date of the album on the magazine and the artists name and webpage as well as the album name. Also I can look at this magazine advert and decide whether to use a mix of generic conventions to suit my artists genre or to go against them as Avril Lavigne has used conventions for and against her genre.

Digipack Ideas

My Digipak original ideas

For the front cover of my digipak I decided to put a photo of the artist and their girlfriend having a picnic at the park on it. They are looking at each other laughing whilst sitting down on their picnic blanket. The reason I decided to have this photo as the front cover is because I want the digipak to follow the narrative of the music video and not just be about the single itself. This helps promote the artist and their music video and therefore promotes the single. Also, as Tom Odell is Indie Pop, the location of this front cover being in the park supports the low budget settings that Indie music often has for their music videos and digipak photo locations as the marketing of the artist will be on a low budget. On the front cover the top right hand side has the artists name 'Tom Odell' on it. At the bottom of the front cover the single title 'Grow Old With Me' is written on. The typography will be in a simple font where the words 'Tom Odell' will be in capital letters to make it look bold and stand out to the target market, so when they see the single released in shops they will automatically see the artists name. The name of the single will be in the same font but only the first letter of each word will be in capitals. This is because it looks better. The colours of the front cover will be reasonably bright as it is supposed to be a picnic during the day and be a positive setting to support the positive lyrics in the song about him loving his girlfriend and wanting to grow old with her. The artist will be wearing dark colours though as this re-enforces that the genre is Indie Pop as many artists including Tom Odell wear a lot of black/grey/brown.

On the inside of the digipak, there are three photos. Each page from left to right inside the digipak looks like a photo frame with a different photo in them. It looks like a timeline of photos. The photo on the far left is a photo of the couple (artist and girlfriend) when they are at their current age (how old they are at the beginning of the music video), and are just going out. The middle photo is a photo of them when they are slightly older (possibly in their early thirties), and are married with a child and she is pregnant again. This is to show what their life will be like in the future when they start to 'grow old together' and then the third photo on the right side, inside the digipak is a photo of them when they are a lot older and they are still happy all those years later. The photo in the middle has a circle around it as the CD will be placed on this part of the digipak. This idea of them getting older together and being shown through photo frames is also shown in the music video. This promotes the music video and artist again.

When you first open the front of the digipak the first image you will see on the inside before opening that up to show the three photo frame images on the inside will be a performance photo. This will be of the artist playing on the piano and singing the lyrics to the song. It will be low key lighting in the room to make sure it looks of the Indie Pop genre. The artist will also be wearing dark clothing and playing on a black piano to follow the generic conventions within this genre. It will also be nice to have this photo on the digipak as then it does not just have photos about the narrative of the music video for this song but also shows what the artist is like as a performer.

On the back of this digipak that I have designed, in order to follow the front cover of having a theme at the park. The back page will be a photo of the grass/ field. At the top of this page will be the name of the single 'Grow Old With Me' in a simple font and next to this there will be a brown leaf. This is to show that the leaf is old and that they will become old together, but supports the outdoor park theme. Underneath this the lyrics will be placed on top of the grass background. This is because there wont be a list of other songs as this digipak is for a single and not an album and it is nice for the target market/ buyer of this digipak to be able to look at the lyrics they will be hearing on the CD. At the very bottom of the back of the digipak there will be two birds who are on the grass, this supports the park theme but also that two animals want to be together and like each others company as do human as this song is about two people who want to be together and grow old together.

Tom Odell - CD Analysis

As Tom Odell does not have any digipaks that he has released i'm going to do an analysis of his CD album. On the front cover of his album 'Long Way Down' Tom Odell is standing in a cobbled street. This is a simple, free, setting to fit the low budget theme of an indie pop album. This is because the marketing side of promoting this artist is on a low budget. The photo on the front cover has a shot looking all the way down a street but the other side of the street is slightly out of focus/ blurred. This goes with the name 'Long Way Down' and maybe there is a long road to go down his path of life. The typography on the front cover of his album is all in capital letters. The artists name is next to the album title however they are in different colours to show that they are different. The text 'Tom Odell' in in brown and the album title 'Long Way Down' in in white. The reason they are both the same size and next to each other is because he is not trying to promote his album but also he is promoting himself as an artist.

On the back cover of this album, the background photo is of a brick wall. This is to also re-enforce the genre of indie pop by having the generic convention of a low budget location. The wall has graffiti on it and looks old, this is to show that it is a real location and to not make it look like an on set, fake wall. You can then see a tiny bit of Tom Odell leaning against this wall but you can not see his face. He is wearing the same clothes as he wore in the front cover which suggests he is leaning on a wall down the same street as the photo on the front cover. On the right hand side of the back cover there are a list of the songs on this album. They are all in bold capital letters and are white on top of a brown background to make them stand out a lot. This is to promote each song on the album. By promoting Tom Odell's songs it also promotes him as a singer song writer. The barcode is located in the bottom right hand corner of the album, this is so that it does not take up a lot of the album. Next to this in small writing there is white text talking about Sony Music Entertainment and above the bare code there is bigger writing saying 'Sony Music', this is all to promote Sony as a company. This is because they are the company who are making it possible for Tom Odell to release his music to a mass amount of people. Although Tom Odell is an indie pop artist he has a mainstream record label releasing his music.

By analysing Tom Odell's CD cover this will help me when I come to making my digipak cover. This is because the digipak I will design will be promoting the song by Tom Odell called Grow Old With Me. As we are making our artist very similar by being of the genre indie pop as he needs to look like he is potentially singing the song, we will take inspiration for our digipak by looking at this album. For example I will ensure that the locations are low budget and our artist is wearing dark, simple clothing. I will have a simple text and make sure that the name of the artist is in bold to promote him.

Digipak analysis - Katy Perry, Teenage dream

Katy Perry as an artist is in the musical genre of Pop. For the digipak of teenage dream, Katy Perry used a more materialistic approach to what photos she would use on her digipak to follow the generic conventions of the pop genre. This is because pop artist often spend a lot of money on locations and settings within their music videos, advertisements and digipaks because the record labels they are signed by have a higher budget as they are mainstream compared to independent companies that do not have  much money to spend on the marketing of their artist. Katy Perry is signed to Columbia Records who are a main stream record label under the ownership of Sony Music Entertainment and have many popular artists who they have signed.

The front cover of the digipak for teenage dream is a photo of Katy Perry naked, laying in clouds of pink candy floss. In this photo there is high key lighting to show off her body and she is wearing re lipstick. The red lipstick is to show that Katy Perry is trying to look sexy to the male members of her target audience. Katy Perry also has black hair in this photo, the black hair has connotations of mystery and black is often associated with sexiness and seduction and is reinforcing that Katy Perry is trying to look sexy in the photo to attract male members of her target audience to buy her digipak. To promote Katy Perry as an artist she has her name in red bold letters at the top of the front cover. The red follows the theme of sweets as well as the candy floss as the writing looks like liquorish but also the red follows the theme of a sexual young female. At the bottom of this front cover the name of the album 'Teenage Dream' is there written in red and white and looks like candy canes. This is again showing the theme of sweets and candy but is using red again. On the lower right hand corner of the front cover it says 'Parental Advisory', this is suggesting to the audience that the content of the lyrics in the music and the photos within this digipak may be inappropriate for young children as it is sexual and may be seen as rude.

The image used on the inside cover before opening the digipak in full is of Katy Perry's face with her arm behind her head and her chest is on show. Again she is laying on pink candy floss. This is reinforcing the theme of candy and of her being sexual and seductive especially as she is looking into the camera. This makes the male audience think about her looking at them and make them think 'I need to listen to the music in this digipak to hear what she has to say', it also promoted the music videos as then the men get to see Katy Perry look like this in the music videos. Again Katy Perry has black hair, and the black hair connotes mystery as well as black being associated with sexiness.

On the back page of this music video the pink candy floss cloud carries on to the back being the background photo and on top of this the list of all the tracks are in red text. This red text is following the same colour as the text of the artist Katy Perry which is on the front cover. This suggests that the names of the songs are linked to Katy Perry, she does not just sing them but also the songs have meaning to her. This is because the songs names for example 'teenage dream, last Friday night, California girls etc' are things that she went through or things she dreamt about when she was a teenager. This could link to the photos on her digipak because things she dreamt about when she was a teenager she didn't get so now that she is older she is being in this dream as in reality there isn't candy floss clouds but in this 'dream' she is living it has been possible for her to lay on one.

There is one long photo that takes up the inside of the digipak. This is of Katy Perry wearing a cake wrapper and she is standing next to icing and cakes. This is on a black background. The black background connotes that within this digipak there is mystery which you will find out when you play the CDs, and be maybe surprised by what you will hear. The fact that Katy Perry is wearing an empty cake wrapper could suggest something sexual that she is desired by men as she is sweet like a cake.
The empty wrapper that she is wearing could also suggest that her life is empty from something good and sweet and all there is now is bad.

The two CDs that come in this digipak both look like sweets, one of them looks like a sprinkled donut and one of the pictures looks like a candy cane and it is red and white swirls. These CDs support the theme of sweet food and candy. The sugared donut is a connotation that she is half really sweet and  as the sprinkles add to her sweetness. however, the red and white sweet on the other CD shows another side to her which is the white part where she started innocent and then the red is sexual and is covering over the white to show that she is changing and that she is now becoming a woman and isn't a teenager anymore.

By analysing this digipak it will be good for me when making my digipak because I can look at the generic conventions this digipak uses and think that I need to use the generic conventions of my the genre of my artist in my digipak. This included the location not being materialistic and being a low budget setting. I will also use colours and lighting to make sure that they have connotations.
