Katy Perry as an artist is in the musical genre of Pop. For the digipak of teenage dream, Katy Perry used a more materialistic approach to what photos she would use on her digipak to follow the generic conventions of the pop genre. This is because pop artist often spend a lot of money on locations and settings within their music videos, advertisements and digipaks because the record labels they are signed by have a higher budget as they are mainstream compared to independent companies that do not have much money to spend on the marketing of their artist. Katy Perry is signed to Columbia Records who are a main stream record label under the ownership of Sony Music Entertainment and have many popular artists who they have signed.
The front cover of the digipak for teenage dream is a photo of Katy Perry naked, laying in clouds of pink candy floss. In this photo there is high key lighting to show off her body and she is wearing re lipstick. The red lipstick is to show that Katy Perry is trying to look sexy to the male members of her target audience. Katy Perry also has black hair in this photo, the black hair has connotations of mystery and black is often associated with sexiness and seduction and is reinforcing that Katy Perry is trying to look sexy in the photo to attract male members of her target audience to buy her digipak. To promote Katy Perry as an artist she has her name in red bold letters at the top of the front cover. The red follows the theme of sweets as well as the candy floss as the writing looks like liquorish but also the red follows the theme of a sexual young female. At the bottom of this front cover the name of the album 'Teenage Dream' is there written in red and white and looks like candy canes. This is again showing the theme of sweets and candy but is using red again. On the lower right hand corner of the front cover it says 'Parental Advisory', this is suggesting to the audience that the content of the lyrics in the music and the photos within this digipak may be inappropriate for young children as it is sexual and may be seen as rude.
The image used on the inside cover before opening the digipak in full is of Katy Perry's face with her arm behind her head and her chest is on show. Again she is laying on pink candy floss. This is reinforcing the theme of candy and of her being sexual and seductive especially as she is looking into the camera. This makes the male audience think about her looking at them and make them think 'I need to listen to the music in this digipak to hear what she has to say', it also promoted the music videos as then the men get to see Katy Perry look like this in the music videos. Again Katy Perry has black hair, and the black hair connotes mystery as well as black being associated with sexiness.
On the back page of this music video the pink candy floss cloud carries on to the back being the background photo and on top of this the list of all the tracks are in red text. This red text is following the same colour as the text of the artist Katy Perry which is on the front cover. This suggests that the names of the songs are linked to Katy Perry, she does not just sing them but also the songs have meaning to her. This is because the songs names for example 'teenage dream, last Friday night, California girls etc' are things that she went through or things she dreamt about when she was a teenager. This could link to the photos on her digipak because things she dreamt about when she was a teenager she didn't get so now that she is older she is being in this dream as in reality there isn't candy floss clouds but in this 'dream' she is living it has been possible for her to lay on one.
There is one long photo that takes up the inside of the digipak. This is of Katy Perry wearing a cake wrapper and she is standing next to icing and cakes. This is on a black background. The black background connotes that within this digipak there is mystery which you will find out when you play the CDs, and be maybe surprised by what you will hear. The fact that Katy Perry is wearing an empty cake wrapper could suggest something sexual that she is desired by men as she is sweet like a cake.
The empty wrapper that she is wearing could also suggest that her life is empty from something good and sweet and all there is now is bad.
The two CDs that come in this digipak both look like sweets, one of them looks like a sprinkled donut and one of the pictures looks like a candy cane and it is red and white swirls. These CDs support the theme of sweet food and candy. The sugared donut is a connotation that she is half really sweet and as the sprinkles add to her sweetness. however, the red and white sweet on the other CD shows another side to her which is the white part where she started innocent and then the red is sexual and is covering over the white to show that she is changing and that she is now becoming a woman and isn't a teenager anymore.
By analysing this digipak it will be good for me when making my digipak because I can look at the generic conventions this digipak uses and think that I need to use the generic conventions of my the genre of my artist in my digipak. This included the location not being materialistic and being a low budget setting. I will also use colours and lighting to make sure that they have connotations.
